Des Moines Modern
Quilt Guild
Meeting Minutes
October 18, 2012
1. Board
Meeting
- More information on our guild’s
participation in the Gallery in the Round in Ames will be available by January,
2013. Deadline for submission is May 15, 2013. Details available to-date for
the juried submissions are posted on our website.
- Prospective new Board members were
reviewed.
- All Board members should check the
information Doris uploaded to Google Docs for transition information and
official guild documents.
- Doris offered to continue website
maintenance for the upcoming year.
- Linda H. is starting a new
modern quilt guild for central Florida. We may consider participating in a swap
with her new guild.
- Guild posters and bookmarks are
posted to Google Docs so that members can print and distribute them as
needed. Everyone is encouraged to get
the word out about DSMMQG. One way is to request quilt shops you visit to post
our flyer. Also, if you participate in craft shows, consider putting
flyers/bookmarks on your table.
2. General Meeting
- Election of New Officers: New Board members were elected as follows:
President – Emily V.
Vice President –
Crystal
Secretary – Sherry
VF
Membership - Peg
Treasurer - Sherry
VF
Education
Co-Chairs – Jill MB and Leila
Our photographer
will again be Melissa.
- Program:
Our guest speaker was the talented and entertaining JoAnn Belling. After
asking each guild member what modern quilting meant to them, JoAnn dazzled us with
her modern quilt creations which she designs, pieces, and quilts herself. A
theme throughout her presentation was to use fabric you buy/receive. She
distributed quarter pieces of fabric to everyone attending (how generous!) and
challenged us to USE these fabrics. Finally, JoAnnn shared a mini-quilt she
created just for our meeting. Everyone was inspired.
- Show & Share:
Karen
had been very busy lately. She shared her large granny square quilt top, a
quilt-along paper piecing quilt and a paper pieced pitcher block.
Emma
shared her aqua colored kitchen projects including a George Foremen Grill cover
and hot-pads. These projects were
inspired by the book, Zaka Style.
Crystal
shared a girl’s bed quilt top and a lap quilt in white, blacks and greys.
Emily’s
shared project was a Flickr Swap Tote that she is getting ready to mail.
Melissa’s
project, a “Coming Soon” Halloween quilt top, was presented.
3. Mug
Rug Swap
- The nine participating members showed
off and exchanged their projects. Special thanks to Veronica for coordinating
this event! Smiles all around.
4. Out
Going President Recognition
- On behalf of our entire guild, Veronica
thanked Doris for being co-founder of the
DSMMQG. This guild has been a home for ‘misfit’ quilters who are inspired to
create quilts differently. In recognition of her dedication and tireless work,
members presented Doris with fat quarters in her preferred colors or from her
favorite designers.
5. Calendar
Reminders
- November 15th Meeting: There will be a grab bag holiday swap. If
you’d like to participate, please bring a completed modern project to swap. Any
holiday theme can be used (Christmas, Hanukah, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July,
Valentines, etc.). Last year’s swap items included pillows, bags, pot holders,
tree ornaments, etc. So, there is lots of room for creativity! Also, please
bring a treat to share. It’s time to
renew your annual membership dues or join with a paid membership of $30.
Please bring a check if you haven’t already.
- December: There is NO MEETING in
December. Enjoy your family and friends.
Respectfully submitted by Sherry VF
